Pictures taken 1 month apart
A picture says a thousand words...
Before the Reef Ball Beach Creation Reef, the "beach" was nothing but rocks after just 1 month a beach was
created. 400 Reef Balls were used in 5 feet of water approximately 150 feet offshore 3 wide in a long line with
diagonal boat cuts. The site was hit in Sept. directly by a Category III Hurricane (Georges) with the eye passing overhead, all 400 Reef Balls remained exactly in place...the large waves of Georges did remove all the sand and we expect it to take a month or two before the beach is restored by the natural action of the Reef Balls.POST-HURRICANE SITE INSPECTION
Below is the first image we have received after Hurricane Georges hit the site. The angle of the photo does not allow a direct comparison as in the photographs above but it does show us some of Georges effects. It appears that the beach is "washed down" from the piles of sand near the palm tree bases to a wider, but less thickly covered beach. EMPACA expects this will rebuild itself in a month or two depending upon the weather.
Also note the reduction in palm fronds due to the winds.
