For the Agios Nikolaos Park project we are installing an anti-netting solution which consists of a conical reef unit which is stabilized on the seabed by a vertically inserted metal tube. The distal upper part of this tube is an obstacle for towed fishing gears e.g. bottom trawling, beach seining, while it is not effective against typical gears in use by the coastal fisheries, e.g. nets, long lines etc. Believe me. The Cretan artisanal fishermen will never allow something that can even potentially harm their gears. The reef and the tube "implantation" method are both patented and they have been successfully used in several applications.
