Tuticorin which is located on the southeast coast of India. SDMRI is a non-profit marine research and development organisation, recognised by the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University of Govt. of Tamil Nadu and University Grants Commission of Govt. of India. They have a Ph.D. programme in Marine Biology and at present, 15 students have regiserted for Ph.D. programme.
The objectives of SDMRI are multidisciplinary and "Reef Ecosystem Remediation" is one of the important aspects. At present we have a "Community based artificial reef programme for the enhancement of biodiversity and socio-economics of fisherfolk", funded by Ministry of Transport and Environment of Government of Netherlands. This artificial reef programme is initiated by SDMRI and Coastal Zone Management Centre (CZMC) of Netherlands in January 2002. We have deployed 120 ferro cement modules in three sites and monitoring is going on. Two Ph.D. students are exclusively involved in this project. Recently we have also deployed fly ash bricks in another site to study its impact on the fishery production and also to make comparative study.
It is unfortunate that this AR project will be ended by December 2003. However, we would like to continue the monitoring for another three years and if possible to put more modules. They are looking for funding to continue the program.
