List of Projects:
Feb 2005, "Shelley Porter, Artificial Reef Project Coordinator and Environmental Trainer, and Don MacQueen, Research Advisor, ACAP-Cape Breton, delivered a presentation on the creation and installation of the artificial reef at New Campbellton. The presentation included details of the genesis of the project, how the modules were chosen and manufactured, and plans for reef projects for the coming season. Part of a Reef Ball module mold, a scale model of a module, and some of the equipment used in making the modules were on display. Shelley would like to see a small group of interested divers trained to do scientific monitoring on the reefs, and at some natural sites around the region. She suggested an Underwater Ecologist course could be held, plus if enough people were interested, she could hold a workshop on species identification and data collection specific to the artificial reefs. Photos of the actual installation were not available, but video footage is held at ACAP, and Shelley will try and arrange for a copy of this to be stored at ScubaTech to be viewed by anyone who is interested. The installation of the reef and of the mooring were done by ScubaTech, in conjunction with Paul Hendrickson of Big Bras d’Or. Several divers have already visited the reef and some monitoring has been done. Ken J. and Dave M. affixed numbered aluminum tags to each module on the Christmas Eve dive. Some twine has been strung amongst the modules to make them easier to locate once you are on the site; Ken J. has further plans to run a rope from the pilings of the old pier out to the reef site, to make locating it quicker and easier."
